Nursery - Pre-K
The Early Childhood Program is located in the Early Childhood Center
(ECC) which is a facility specially developed to provide a half
day Nursery program for 3-4 year olds and a full day Pre-Kindergarten
program for 4-5 year olds. Maximum class size is 14 students and
all teachers are supported by a full time Teacher Assistant.
The overall aims of the ECC program are to:
• Develop language, social and motor skills;
• Introduce students to inquiry based learning.
This is achieved through a combination of games, songs, creative
projects and expressive activities, based around a central idea
that is often taken from the International Baccalaureate Primary
Years Programme (IBPYP). Children learn through activities such
as playing with blocks; measuring sand, water or ingredients for
cooking; observing changes in the environment; working with wood
and tools; examining and sorting objects; and singing and listening
to music from various cultures.
English skills are developed through reading, writing, speaking
and listening on a daily basis. Activities include story telling,
shared reading, dramatisation and role playing. Students experiment
with writing by purposefully scribbling, drawing, tracing and copying.
Within the Mathematics Program, activities are provided for the
exploration of: sorting, patterning, number, measurement and space.
Science and Technology learning is also activity based, where students
discover aspects of living things, light, sound, designing and making.
Social Studies is theme based and encompasses elements of personal,
social and environmental education. Projects are linked to students'
interests, and often involve other members of the school community.
The ECC Program is delivered through a broad range of subject specific
and inter-disciplinary topics which are organised to coincide with
themes such as seasonal changes, festivals, the local environment,
Chinese Culture and school-based activities. In addition, students
work with teachers who are specialists in Art, Music and Physical
Education. The learning spaces within the ECC are organised such
that students may explore the following areas:
• English, drama, music and dance;
• Role-play, construction and small world;
• Water, sand, physical education and pets;
• Art, including technology, clay and dough;
• Mathematics, Science and Computers.
Assemblies and concerts are held throughout the year, providing
opportunities for children to build self-esteem and confidence by
exposing them to performing in front of a larger group setting.
Parents are warmly welcomed to these events.
