'Small Change For Big Change' -
PTA Small Change Appeal
This year the PTA’s Small Change Appeal
will benefit children from local low-income
schools (Dandelion Migrant Workers’
Middle School, Tao Yuan School, Miyun Primary
School, Flowers in the Heart); homes for
children from problematic family backgrounds
(Sun Village for children of prisoners and
New Life Center for street children); and
children in very low-income areas of the
Tibetan Plateau (via the Jinpa and Jo Charles*
Foundations).
The students’ personal stories clearly
express their need for our support. Following
is one student’s story:
“I am 8-years-old. I live in Yushu
Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai
Province. I live so high in the mountains
(4,500m) that very little grows or survives.
During the summer, my family lives in a
yak hair tent, which we move from place
to place with our yaks. During the winter
we live in a one-room mud house. I live
one day’s journey by horse from school.
There are eight people in my family. We
have 13 yaks but it takes 5 yaks per person
to support a family. We earn 175RMB per
family member a year by collecting caterpillar
fungus high in the mountains.” (Caterpillar
fungus is used for the treatment of coughs,
asthma and health of the lungs and kidneys.)
Cost of school for 1 year: 2530
RMB (includes room and board)
The PTA has posted displays of the sponsored
children in the ES Atrium, beside the MS
aquarium and on the Grade 10 Notice Board
in the HS. Each class can collectively sponsor
one or more children.
A group of Grade 2 and 3 students has already
hosted one bake sale and raised 742 RMB
- enough money to send one child to school
for a year!
