WAB Students Take Action on Earth Day

WAB Students Take Action on Earth Day

On April 22, students and teachers at WAB engaged in a range of hands-on activities both on and off campus to celebrate Earth Day. They raised awareness about sustainability and promoted the 5 R's Principle: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.

Senior students took on leadership roles and organized various projects. Grade 11 students arranged events for EY and JG1 learners to participate in. Grade 7 students partnered with their G2 buddies to learn about reusing and repurposing objects by setting up thrift shops in the HUB Gym. The funds raised from these shops will go to support WAB's student-led sustainability initiatives.

In addition, G5 and G9 students visited Jinpoluo Village to learn about organic farming. They had the opportunity to make organic fertilizers and pesticides and also experienced traditional brickmaking.

Meanwhile, Grade 6 students visited FunFarmFam together with their Senior Grade 1 buddies to learn about sustainable farming practices. Ian Slate, the Middle School teacher and Sustainability Lead, expressed "Grade 6 students had a wonderful time at the farm learning how to be caring and helpful big brothers and sisters with our SG1 buddies. Through the activities, the students learned some key planting and harvesting skills, as well as getting inspired to see what our Middle School garden could look like in the future." Another middle School teacher Zachary Maxwell echoed, saying it's a great opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning during the day.

Furthermore, G10 and G3 student buddies gained more knowledge about environmental protection and the ecosystem by visiting the Wenyu River, collecting trash, and designing informational signs for the riverbank.

On campus, G8 and G4 student buddies explored nature around them through outdoor navigation, water sports, and other activities. Phillip Cowell, a Grade 4 teacher, shared, "Grade 4 students were led by their Grade 8 buddies through a series of activities ranging from picking up trash along the riverside to creating structures using natural materials, investigating the UN Sustainable Development Goals goals, and enjoying nature on Duck Lake."

Overall, it was an action-filled day for all WAB learners and be sure to watch our highlight video above.
