Western Academy of Beijing's Tigers basketball teams partnered with their rivals to fight against cancer.
The girls' and boys' teams from WAB and ISB competed on Friday evening, and with support from their coaches, school bands, local restaurants, and the Tiger Sports Winning Streak club, put together a charity event that raised nearly 10,000 RMB for cancer research.
"The people who came out to support this evening made it such an incredible and lively environment," said Caleb Liu, WAB's Assistant Activities Director. "We're proud of our student groups, families and staff who made such positive contributions to initiatives and people that need support."
The student group Winning Streak worked hard to make the event as festive as possible, gathering several prizes to be raffled off to raise money, recruiting performers to bring exciting vibes to the HUB, and having the vision and drive to organize the event from planning to clean up.The Beijing community came out in waves for the Coaches Vs. Cancer event, cheering on the teams, enjoying a cookout, and being treated to entertainment from bands and dance teams. Six students from Middle and High School also took part in a Locks of Love donation, cutting 20 centimeters of their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Thank you to Alicia, Chloe, Brishti, Zoe, Elly and Emma, whose generosity will make a difference in the lives of six people undergoing chemotherapy.
Thanks to the students of the Tiger Sports and Entertainment Network, who broadcast both games and all of the performances live online with commentary and analysis. You can watch all the action here.
Friday night's festivities were the start of a new WAB tradition. Keep an eye out for similar events in the future that will support local and international charities through athletics events at WAB.
