Goals of Transition from Elementary School to Middle School
include:
• Making the transition experience authentic;
• Beginning to introduce some IBMYP terminology at the end
of Grade 5;
• Continuing to use IBPYP terminology into Grade 6;
• Encouraging daily use of Homework Diary in the latter part
of Grade 5;
• Sharing student portfolios and assessment information between
Grade 5 and Grade 6;
• Information sharing and dialogue between Grade 5 and Grade
6 teachers;
• Grade 5 Transition Week and Leaving Celebration as a ‘rite of passage’
from ES to MS.
Goals of our Transition of students from Middle School
to High School include:
• Making the transition experience authentic;
• Looking at the ‘Whole High School Picture’ –
High School Course offerings including the IB Diploma Program, WAB courses and
College Counseling;
• Information sharing and dialogue between Grade 8 and Grade
9 teachers;
• Information sharing with new High School students and parents;
• Grade 8 Transition Week and Graduation Ceremony as a “rite of passage”
from MS to HS.
WAB aims to support transition through a range of activities,
including a comprehensive new student orientation program, grade
level transition days and parent workshops.
Grade 8 Graduation
Another important element of the transition process is the Grade
8 Graduation. Each year in June, the Grade 8 classes take part in
the Grade 8 Graduation Ceremony. This event has become a meaningful
way to say good-bye and to congratulate our students for their year-long
work. In addition, this ceremony is an important “Rite of
Passage” as our students leave Middle School and enter High
School.
