WAB Students Help Launch the Olympic ‘Green
Dream’ Campaign
Over 40 WAB ES and MS students joined ES and MS students
from across Beijing last Friday for the official launch
ceremony of ‘Green Dreams Colorful Olympics,’ which
was sponsored by the Beijing Organizing Committee for
the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).
A group of 15 WAB students collaborated with other
Beijing students to paint bright, colorful scrolls
promoting environmental protection and the 2008 Beijing
Games.
Students from WAB and two Chinese schools, were honored
to present a giant scroll to BOCOG.
The scroll will be one of many student artworks displayed
at the Olympic Village and Media Village.
MS student Isobel Dollar and a Chinese school student,
co-presented to an audience of approximately 300 students,
leaders and journalists, about how youth can pursue the ‘Green
Dream’.
“Now is the time to protect the earth and to promote
a green civilization, to show our social development
and progress,” Isobel said.
“This needs everyone’s involvement and participation.
Let’s stand together, hand in hand to protect and
build a green China.”
Isobel proposed that youth around the world take the
following steps towards making the world a better, greener
place:
- Start with small actions such as saving one drop
of water or one piece of
paper
- Avoid using disposal items such as take-away
chopsticks and paper cups
- Recycle as many resources
as possible from daily life
- Sort your garbage for easier
recycling
- Walk or use bicycles as much as possible
WAB students also participated in a tree planting ceremony. They watered
the young saplings and strung their branches with colorful cards promoting
the Green Olympics.
Wang Yan, WAB Business Manager, said the students “behaved outstandingly,” including
those students who were interviewed by the local and international media,
which included CCTV and CNN.
ES Assistant Principal Julian Edwards concurred, “WAB students
fielded many questions by reporters about the environment and their
answers were very knowledgeable.”
Julian also enthused, “The ceremony was a wonderful opportunity
for our students to contribute to the cultural and environmental
celebrations surrounding the Beijing Games alongside students from Chinese
schools.
This was a great example of younger students being involved in service
as ‘Olympic Volunteers’ and they fulfilled the role very
well.
As a Beijing 2008 Olympic Education Model School, this
was a rich experience for our students to help raise
consciousness of the Green Olympics and to bring what they learned
back to WAB.”
WAB is set to make its own very special contribution to enhancing the
Beijing natural environment with its Lake rehabilitation project.

WAB in this project are encouraged to contact Trish Smith
