10 June 2005: 'WAB TEACHERS AWARDED FOR
EXCELLENCE!'
Grade 6 Teachers were recently recognized by the
USA National Middle Schools Association (NMSA) for
their outstanding team effort in raising levels
of student achievement.
WAB was presented with a NMSA Teams That Make a
Difference Certificate for the collaborative planning
and team-teaching efforts of the Grade 6 English,

3 June 2005: 'INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S
DAY!'
On Wednesday, as part of a very special celebration
of International Children’s Day the EU Ambassador
Serge Abou presented awards to the 10 winners of
the EU and Me Art Competition who were visiting
WAB.
30,000 students out of 1.2 million school children
in the poorest and most underdeveloped parts of
Gansu Province took part in the competition, which
helped commemorate 30 years of diplomatic relations
between Europe and China and a special development
European funded project that has supported education
in the province.
The 10 winners (ranging in age from 5 – 13
years) of the competition spent two days at WAB
working with WAB students in art workshops and techniques
and having a wonderful time. WAB has had a
special connection with Gansu Province for some
time now having responded to devastating earthquakes
there three years ago. Each year Grade 9 students
visit Gansu as part of their week long China Studies
Field Trip. The exhibition of over 100 artworks
are on display in the Elementary School this week.
19 May 2005: 'GRADE 5 ARTISTS GET
MOBILE!'
There will be another first for WAB next Tuesday
24 May as Grade 5 students present the results of
their recent visual and performing arts project.
Working across visual and performing arts, the students
have been encouraged to consider aspects of the
school environment and to represent their thoughts
and feelings about different places and functions
in the the school through different media.
The products of this will have to remain a secret
until the performance itself, but a key aspect of
the show will be its use of a variety of locations
- known in the art world as an installation.
12 May 2005: 'HUB NEARS COMPLETION'
The HUB Sports Arts and Technology Center is set
for handover in two weeks – 3 months ahead
of schedule. This will provide plenty of time to
‘shake out’ the building systems including
the new gas powered air-conditioning and heating
systems that have been installed campus wide.
Once the building is handed over – new
furniture will be installed and WAB’s IT
Department will begin installing the wireless
network. The fences will stay up as landscaping
work continues ahead of the PTA ‘Sneak Peak’
Evening the ‘PTA Wannabe Party’ on
Saturday June 4. Put the date in your calendar
to be the first to see this wonderful new addition
to the WAB Campus!

14 April 2005: 'NATURAL GAS SWITCH SET
TO BENEFIT BUDGET AND ENVIRONMENT'
In just 2 weeks oil fuelled heaters and electric
air conditioners will be a thing of the past as
the switch is flicked on WAB’s $1.2 million
gas conversion project.
A significant engineering work, the project has
been progressing steadily in the shadow of the
HUB project and with minimal disruption to the
school’s operation.
Gas fuelled chiller and heating systems will
provide long-term energy savings for WAB and are
a positive step for the environment.

7 April 2005: 'SPRING IS IN THE AIR!'
Many of the PK classes went for a walk on Monday
to look for changes in the plants around the school.
We walked through the Chinese Garden and finished
off in the Secret Garden. We saw lots of tiny buds
on the trees. Some had started to open. We wondered
if the buds were going to open up into leaves or
blossoms. We will have to go back and find out.
At the end of the walk we had a picnic eating sandwiches
the children had prepared themselves.

Margo Marks and Katarina hosted 30 students and

24 march 2005: 'MODEL UNITED NATIONS (BEIMUN)'
The United Nations is a highly complex organization.
A “Model” United Nations is more than
a watered-down simulation of the real thing and
mirrors its processes with great accuracy. It is
a complex affair and demands an extremely high level
of debating and thinking skills together with considerable
background knowledge, gained by long hours of research.
More than 500 students from approximately 50 schools
traveled to Beijing from all over the world to be
part of the 12th Annual BEIMUN Conference which
took place on March 18, 19 and 20.

'IBMYP PERSONAL PROJECTS'
On Monday 21 February the MSHS held a presentation
night and exhibition for the Grade 10 Personal Projects.
The Grade 10 students have been working on their
projects for seven months. Each student kept a detailed
process journal. They had to identify clearly in
their reflective statement what they learnt about
themselves as learners, and what they would do differently
next time. In May this year some of our Grade 10
students will lead workshops on the project for
Grade 9. These workshops will be held in conjunction
with a school in Tianjin and will mark the beginning
of the project for Grade 9 students. The diversity
of projects created by our students is a testament
to their willingness to take risks as learners and
their capacity for critical and creative thinking.

TSUNAMI AID APPEAL We have identified
two projects that involve rebuilding schools,
one in Aceh, Indonesia and one in a village in
the south of Sri Lanka. We would like to raise
US$10,000 for each project. This is the cost of
one classroom, equipment and clothing for the
children in Sri Lanka and the cost of a dormitory
to be built onto an existing school in Aceh to
house the homeless children and enable them to
attend the school.

WABATHON 2005
WABathon 2005 promises again to be an event not
to be missed. The support for this community event
has once again exceeded our expectations. On Saturday
January 29 from 9am-11am the WAB gymnasium will
be packed with children and adults all exercising
together to an assortment of music and fun routtines.
WABathon supports the popular Chinese notion of
'quan min jian shen' or 'fitness for everyone'
and we are proud to be running such a popular
mass-participation exercise even at WAB.

2005 - YEAR OF THE ROOSTER Welcome to
all new and returning students and families. We
look forward to another great term at WAB. On
Monday we held an orientation program for our
new students and families, which included 31 students
representing 16 countries including a number of
students who have returned to China and WAB. Great
to have you back!
We are relieved to know that all our WAB family
has returned safely following the earthquake and
tsunami in Asia. Unfortunately not all schools
were as fortunate and we send our deepest sympathy
and heart felt wishes to all those affected.
For those who have been at school this week,
apart from the normal ‘buzz’ of excitement
as you walk around the school and into classrooms,
you will have noticed a festive ‘air’
with decorations in all the school centers in
preparation for Chinese Culture Week and Spring
Festival.

MIAO PEOPLE VISIT WAB
This year WAB is promoting Minority Cultures.
WAB China Studies Office recently invited a group
of 13 Chinese ethnic Miao people (Miaozu) to WAB.
All Grade 3 students and teachers spent a full
day with them to explore the symbols in the Miao
culture. Two classes also spent time in their
art and music classes to find out the symbols
in their drawings and songs.
The current Grade 3’s PYP Unit is “Symbolism”,
with the central idea of symbolism in the arts
as one way groups of people can communicate their
identity. It also includes inquiries into: ‘What
symbolism is’, ‘Why groups establish
a collective identity’ and ‘How groups
display their identity using symbolism through
the arts’.

Lianxi 9 December - WAB COMMUNITY
IS ALL HEART!
What a fantastic Holiday Bazaar on Saturday and
what a staggering amount of money (US$10,000)
was raised as a result of everyone’s efforts–
record breaking in all respects.
Well done to the students who entertained us
during the day – you all did a great job.
It’s wonderful to see so many of our students
up on stage enjoying the limelight! Thanks go
to all of our parents and community groups for
their support in baking and cooking - everyone’s
diet went out of the window for the day!
Thanks also go to the MS student groups who worked
so cooperatively and enthusiastically on the cloakroom,
in the ‘Kids Corner’ and last but
not least, to those students who raised money
for Charity by selling items such as popcorn,
cards and jewelry.
