CHARITY PROJECT UPDATES
Mooncake collection
Mooncakes are a traditional delicacy, full of flavour and symbolism. Many WAB parents receive more mooncakes than they can eat. In September we collected spare mooncakes and delivered them to a migrant school and low income workers Around WAB. Over 35 bags of mooncakes were collected and distributed.
Toiletry Collection
In September the Charity Committee collected unused airline and hotel toiletries for passing on to the 'Rural Women' Foundation who train young women from the countryside, to enable them to find jobs in their home towns.
Each girl receives a toiletry bag with shampoo, toothbrush, comb, etc. Spare toiletries are given to the 'Jo Charles Foundation' for her students.
Donation to Chinacare
Chinacare is a foundation that specialises in sick orphans. Where possible they find adoptive homes for the babies after they have given them the medical care they can. Some children are placed in local foster homes. Seriously sick babies are looked after in special units.
The WAB PTA Charity Committee recently bought for Chinacare an oxygen concentrator machine to help ease the breathing of these very sick babies.
Beautiful Harbor
The PTA Charity Committee visited Beatiful Harbour Foster Home to drop off some clothes collected in the clothing drive. This home is situated close to WAB and has roughly twenty babies and young children.
Children's Clothing Drive
The PTA Clothing Drive has benefited impoverished children living throughout China, including children from western China (pictured here), who received WAB's contributions through the help of the Jingpa Foundation. Thanks to the support of the WAB community, a total of 55 parcels of children's clothing were sent to over ten charitable organizations based on Beijing and around China.
In addition to clothing, the PTA enclosed packets of felt tip pens, which were also donated to the collection. Parcels were sent to the following destinations:
Sun Village: A home for children whose parents are in prison
Chinacare: A home for children requiring medical care
Starfish: A home for girls (ages 16-18)
Jo Charles Foundation: A foundation that helps build schools to educate the Yi Minority children and women.
Rural Women in the Know: A special training center for young women to learn a skill
Other recipients included: the Chaoyang Homeless Center, Shechen Charity Orphan School, Tao Yuan Migrant School, Light & Love School, New Hope Foster Home and Beautiful Harbour.
Charity Bazaar
WAB held its annual charity bazaar on Saturday 24 November. Parents and members of the whole community came to shop, buy presents, try exotic foreign food enjoy a day out. The profit from the bazaar amounted to RMB 76,838.20. This money has been donated to the Jinpa Foundation to purchase a herd of yak for the Karmi school in southern Qinghai. The milk from the yak will be added to the children's daily food and will help reduce malnutrition among the children.
Angels Project
Charities from around China send us photographs of elderly people who will not survive the winter without assistance. At the bazaar flower fridge magnets were sold to raise money for the care for the elderly. Each magnet was accompanied by a card with a picture of an elderly person and details about this person's life. A massive RMB 45,932 was raised with this project.
Adult Clothing Collection
In December the WAB community collected 26 postal bags full of warm adult winter clothing for a burned out village. The clothing was collected, posted and distributed within two weeks of the disaster.
Used Stamp Collection
In January the WAB community donated their used postage stamps for use in fundraising by teh Red Cross. A full envelope was collected.
Spectacles Drive
In February the WAB community donated some 40 pairs of used glasses which were sent off to Orbis China for analysis and redistribution among the disadvantaged in the west of China.
Small Change Appeal
In February and March WAB students collected small change to pay school or boarding fees for poor children all over China. The PTA are still hard at work counting all the coins and notes but more than RMB70,000 has already been raised! A report will follow with full details on how much was raised and which children were sent to school in which districts. Thank you, WAB community, for your fantastic generosity! |
