CHARITY FOCUS

Over the coming weeks the WAB PTA Charity Committee will provide information about some of the charity organisations that we work with and support.

The Charles Foundation
http://www.charlesfoundation.org

The Charles Foundation for Children in Need facilitates the education of underprivileged children in Sichuan province, China. Education of girls is emphasised by the Foundation, as it is still customary for many minority communities in remote rural areas to deny girls opportunity. [Click here for more information]

Surmang Foundation
http://www.surmang.org

The Surmang Foundation (g) works with the very poor in the remote areas of Western China up on the plateaus. In an area where healthcare is very basic and women give birth with the animals this foundation concentrates mostly on healthcare and health education.

In both 2005 and 2006 WAB gave the proceeds of the charity bazaar to the Surmang foundation to pay for doctors' salaries and medications. WAB also provides clothing through the clothing drive, school fees for some children through the 'Small Chnage Appeal' and support for some of the elderly through the 'Angels'project.

Jinpa Foundation
http://www.jinpa.org

The Jinpa Foundation is a small foundation working with the remote, nomadic yak-herding people up on the high plateaus. Their focus is on education and health.

WAB has supported the Jinpa Foundation with clothing through the clothing drive, support for the elderly through the 'Angel' project and school fees for the young through the 'Small Change Appeal'.

China Care
htp://www.chinacare.org

China Care works with orphans in China concentrating on those with disabilities and special medical needs. Many of their orphans receive operations. Some of their orphans are adopted, others are placed in foster home projects, run by China Care.

WAB supports China Care with clothing from the clothing drive. Recently WAB bought an oxygen concentrator machine for their very sick children.

Rural Women
http://www.nongjianv.org/english/

Rural Women is a project that works to improve the future of women living in rural areas by giving them training and better education.

WAB supports their work with toiletries from the toiletries drive and clothing from the clothing drive.

Operation Blessing
http://www.obchina.org

Operation Blessing is an organisation that works with the poor and the needy. They visit old people's homes, provide medical care and attention.

WAB supports the work of Operation Blessing with items for the elderly through the 'Angels' and clothing through the clothing drive.

Bethel
http://www.bethel.org

Bethel Foster Home for the Blind provides a home and education for the blind and partially sighted.
WAB has supported Bethel through the clothing drive and pays the fees for one little blind girl.

Sun Village
http://www.ertongcun.org

The Sun Village provides a home and education for children of prisoners.
WAB helped build one of their boarding houses and supports some of the students with their schoolfees through the 'Small Change Appeal'. WAB also gives clothes through the clothing drive and recently bikes for the middle school children who have a long way to go to school.

Animals Asia
http://www.animalsasia.org

Animals Asia has set as its goal to end animal cruelty in Asia. They hope to educate people out of eating cats and dogs and to end the farming of moonbears for their bile. To date they have rescued 219 moonbears from inhumane farming conditions in China.

WAB sponsors a moonbear each year.

Dandelion School
http://www.dandelionschool.org

Dandelion Schol is a registered middle school for the children of migrant workers in Beijing. Many of the students come from very poor backgrounds and board at the school in order to study in relative comfort.
WAB supports the school with clothing from the clothing appeal, with school and boarding fees through the 'Small Change Appeal' and recently with book envelopes for all the students.

Other Charitable Causes

In addition to those listed, WAB also supports a variety of foster homes, schools and orphanages with equipment and clothing.

WAB also runs a number of 'recycling' projects collecting the following items:

  • used spectacles for Orbis China;
  • used postage stamps for the Society for the Blind
  • unclaimed lost property for orphanages;
  • unwanted school stationery for local migrant schools.
