WAB Co-founder Michael Crook was born in Beijing in 1951. His deep Chinese roots originate from his parents, who moved to China to live and work. Having established his life here in Beijing, Michael has built many relationships and considers this city his home. He was invited to take part in the 60th and, most recently, the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. One of Beijing's largest TV stations, BTV, released a documentary about Michael's life in China just ahead of the National Day holiday. (Watch the video above or click here - VPN off. In 1994, Michael and his friends established Western Academy of Beijing with the goal of bridging the gap between the Chinese and western cultures and styles of education. The group aimed to offer a truly international education system for the children of foreigners working in Beijing. One of WAB’s distinguishing features as a school is its engagement with China and its students’ exploration of local culture.

Furthermore, Michael does so much for the Beijing community, committing his time and energy for the benefit of his home city, including enhancing foreign language environments prior to the 2008 Olympics. For his work, he earned the highest Beijing award for foreigners, the Great Wall Friendship Award.

Congratulations, Michael Crook. And thank you for your contributions to China, Beijing, and WAB.
