Dr. Jane Celebrates 20 Years of Roots & Shoots at WAB

WAB's long-time friend, Dr. Jane Goodall, visited on Thursday to speak with Roots & Shoots students from several international schools in what was yet another incredible meeting.

Not only is WAB celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, but 2014 also marks the 20th year that Roots & Shoots has been at WAB – and in China.

A long-time friend, WAB's video director Greg MacIsaac, helped Dr. Jane bring the environmental program from its founding country of Tanzania to China through WAB, and the program has since blossomed to more than 600 schools throughout the country.

After a lively welcoming of drums and song, Dr. Jane walked over Xiang Yin Bridge with high school students, who had recently secured an RMB5,000 scholarship to help fund the WAB Roots & Shoots' efforts to clean Duck Lake.

Hundreds of students from several international schools in the area gathered in WAB's Founder's Theatre to talk with Dr. Jane. Representatives from seven schools' Roots & Shoots programs presented their individual projects, which included efforts to help homeless animals in Beijing, clean up air pollution, symbolically adopt endangered animals and spread awareness about the cruelty of finning sharks.

Afterward, Dr. Jane inspired the audience of students by talking about her own experiences, sharing stories about her legendary work with chimpanzees, talking about how she overcame challenges as her work progressed and explaining the ways she learned that animals could think and feel emotions.

Many people feel that they cannot make a difference in the world on their own, Dr. Jane told the students. But the important thing for people to understand, she continued, is that the cumulative effects of small actions can be greatly influential.

"It's exhausting to travel 300 days per year. I see many horrible things, but I also see so many wonderful people and meet so many wonderful people like you," Dr. Jane said.

Until the next time Dr. Jane visits, the WAB family and Roots & Shoots program will continue to be inspired by her life dedicated to planet Earth.
