Health & Language Meet in Traditional Chinese Medicine Lesson

Health & Language Meet in Traditional Chinese Medicine Lesson

by Summer Li, WAB Chinese Teacher

As part of an inquiry into the unit of health, our Grade 9 students participated in a session on Chinese traditional medicine.

As part of our mission to connect students with experts in professional fields and make learning relevant to life outside of school, we invited Ms. Fu, a Chinese traditional medicine expert, to give a demonstration. She taught students about acupuncture and medicinal massage, how to locate pressure points, and explained how massage can benefit their health.

As a way for the lessons to cross multiple subject areas, the students learned how to communicate in Chinese about the topics they were learning. body. This learning experience engaged students in thinking about real-life situations, helped them to further develop knowledge and perspectives about different cultures, and promoted international mindedness.

"It was a really engaging lecture with the students, and it was nice to see someone with expertise travel a long way to teach us," one student said. "I think the massage lesson helped me a lot because now I know how to deal with stress on my own my massaging my shoulder or hands," said another.

Thank you to Ms. Fu for giving your time to make a difference in the learning for our students, Ms. Wang, and Ms. Cassie for their support, as well as Ms. Sophie for the great photos.
