Sewing the Seams of Unity: Student Project Fights Famine

It began with a calling to make a difference.

WAB Grade 12 student Abby C. has been part of a number of student groups aimed at finding solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges. She decided to put her creative skills to work and launch Seam, an independent project focused on upcycling garments to benefit people in Yemen facing famine.

“The threat of famine hangs heavily on the horizon, with millions at risk,” Abby said. “The scope of the problem is intimidating. I couldn't shake the feeling that I could be doing more.”

Abby invites members of the community to contact her for personalized pieces and to drop off their damaged or unused garments. For a small fee, she completely redesigns clothing, completes alterations, and makes repairs. She donates all of her proceeds through UNICEF.

“I think it's an accessible, sustainable way to create something totally customizable,” she said. “There's no need to haggle with tailors or support fast fashion brands.”

The project is just getting started, but Abby is already finding creative ways to increase donations. On top of doing personalized items and simple repairs, Abby has found a love for using old clothes to create new handbags and face masks that she can sell to increase her donations.
