WAB rugby players meet their idols at CAU

Thirty lucky WAB rugby players attended an event they will not forget for the rest of their lives.

The MS and HS were selected to travel to CAU (China's Agricultural University) to meet and learn from three current New Zealand All Blacks rugby players - Aaron Cruden, TJ Perenara and Patrick Tuipolotu – on November 26.

There was a great deal of excitement and anticipation on the bus as nobody was sure what to expect from the trip. Were they going to be able to train with these great players? Would they get to speak with them? Would they teach us the significance of the traditional haka dance? Would they even be able to see them?

The group arrived into the university stadium early, and because it was cold, the players tried to keep warm by doing some rugby drills.

Then it was time.

Three All Blacks were welcomed into the stadium with a haka performed by the Chinese university's rugby team. The haka is a traditional war cry done by the Maori people of New Zealand, now used in sports, to demonstrate strength and prowress to their opponents. It has become a signature of the New Zealand All Blacks team before international competition and is beloved by fans around the world.

The WAB students then watched intently as the Chinese rugby team ran through a training session led by the All Blacks. Then came WAB's moment of glory.

Ten players were selected to meet the All Blacks and play a game of touch rugby against the Chinese team. The rest of the squad was then able to chat with the All Blacks, have photos taken and get autographs.

It was such a unique and incredible experience for everyone involved! The group left the stadium with beaming smiles and thankful for such an amazing opportunity. A big thanks goes out to WAB Athletics and Activities Director Mr. Halpin as well as Mr. Paki for making this happen.

It was truly an unforgettable moment.
