Congratulations to Western Academy of Beijing Grade 9 student Steve Lee, who was named Beijing's 2016 International School Young Musician of the Year.

Steve was up against students from several international schools in Beijing, and competed on Sunday at Dulwich College Beijing in the final round, playing Chopin's "Ballade No. 1 in G Minor" on piano. It was a unique and memorable performance, and that was reflected in the judges' decision. WAB would also like to congratulate Grade 11 student Jem Silud, who also competed in the final round.

Steve worked with WAB teachers like Michelle Yip and received support from friends throughout his preparation for the competition. "Everyone helped me a lot," Steve said. "I'm so happy to meet such kid friends at WAB."

"Not only is this piece of music already very well-known and virtuosic, but after discussions with WAB's Pianist in Residence Michelle Yip and other music faculty, Steve uncovered that he was able to create both a powerful narrative and greater timbral colors within the musical texture," WAB High School Music Teacher Scott Lindner said.

The Young Musician of the Year title is a prestigious one in Beijing. And though Steve is new to WAB and new to Beijing, he felt the immense pride that came with winning, especially while playing his favorite piece.

"I was so surprised that I almost screamed when I was named the winner," he said. "I was so thankful to WAB because everyone helped me a lot. If I have a chance, I'd like to repay everyone's kindness through more performances."
