Target 18 in Action: Collegial Coaching and Mentoring

This post is part of the Targets in Action series, designed to help parents, teachers, students, and the global community better understand how the future of learning looks in action at WAB.

Teachers – like professionals in any industry – benefit from peer coaching and mentoring. Target 18 aims to create more time, space, and opportunity for our teachers to continuously be learning from one another for the benefit of their own professional skills and ultimately the students' learning experience.

Members of the WAB faculty have been designing systems and structures that will create a culture where teachers are always learning from one another. This doesn't need to happen with formal evaluations or assessments. Instead, we want to create an atmosphere where colleagues are informally and regularly seeking and contributing to one another's expertise and growth.

One significant step in this direction was the reorganization of our faculty's performance management systems. Rather than only receiving feedback from their line managers, teachers selected a colleague-mentor with whom they wanted to work on their professional goals. To compliment this, the improved alignment of timetables, especially in our Beijing International Elementary School, has created increased opportunities for professional interaction between teachers in coaching and mentor roles.
