Target 4 in Action: Inquiry-Based Learning

Inquiry-based learning is a fundamental aspect of all three IB Programmes. It is a key element of learning at WAB and is showcased in the projects students complete at the end of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Grade 5, Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grade 8, and the Diploma Programme (DP) in Grade 12.

While much of the learning at WAB involves an inquiry-based approach, these three projects are some of the most important and distinctive examples:

PYP Exhibition
As described by the IBO, "students carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative" inquiry into real-life issues or problems. Teams of students develop questions and then explore, interview, research, and develop reports about their topic and possible solutions. Students take it upon themselves to take action and make an impact in a way related to their topic, as well as create a presentation to share their work with the community. Teachers serve as mentors to provide the teams of students with ideas for sources of information and help spark ideas for learning.

MYP Personal Project
With an increased level of independence compared to the PYP Exhibition, students completing the MYP select a topic for a project that requires them to demonstrate skills, attitudes and knowledge over time. Students decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, and then discover what they need to complete the project. They must demonstrate responsible and impactful actions they have taken based on their learning. It's a cycle of inquiry, action, and then reflection.

DP Extended Essay
The essay all DP students complete prior to High School graduation requires independent exploration into an area of interest related to one of the six DP subjects. Having gone through all three IB Programmes, they have been preparing for a level of independence in their learning that is similar to undergraduate university research. For the essay, students formulate a research question, conduct independent research, and then communicate the ideas succinctly into an essay. With the support and mentorship of a supervisor, the student bears responsibility for learning and creating the entire project.
