Understanding 'Concept-Based Learning'

What is concept-based learning? Concepts are organizing ideas which are universal, timeless and abstract. Concepts are the 'umbrellas' which help us organize our knowledge. At workshops with parents this year, we discussed how concepts require us to analyze, evaluate and investigate at deeper levels.

Helping learners develop conceptual understandings helps them transfer their knowledge across subject areas and become springboards for inspiration and action.

Although concept-based learning may be very different from many parents' experiences in school, we can use our understanding of concepts to have richer conversations with our children about school and help them make connections to prior experiences.

"I didn't understand this way of learning. After this meeting I feel even luckier that my children study at WAB. They develop deeper understandings, rather than only skills and knowledge." – Parent
